Here are some useful strategies to help you when reading the texts that we will be exploring this semester.
You should work to answer these questions for each reading assignment and bring your exploratory thoughts to class so that we can make sense of them together as a group.
1)
Context/Premise
:
What is the article about?
What is the subject matter or the basic conversation that the author is entering?
2)
Argument
What specific claim(s) does the author make about this topic?
What is his or her position?
Try to find specific quotes from the text that name the author’s argument specifically.
This will often be in the introduction or conclusion of the text.
3)
Evidence
How does the author support the claims?
What evidence is offered to support the argument?
